Academic Upgrading

What is Academic Upgrading?

Academic Upgrading is a tuition-free program funded by the Ontario government. Its purpose is to help learners improve their skills in communications, computers, math, biology and chemistry so they can qualify for college programs, apprenticeship pathways and future careers.

Whether you're preparing for college, an apprenticeship or the workplace, we're here to support your success.

Sheridan's Academic Upgrading program is recognized by all 24 Ontario colleges and is designed to meet your unique educational needs.

If you're interested in pursuing a postsecondary education, this program can help you meet the academic requirements for college certificate, diploma and advanced diploma programs.

How to apply

Space is limited, and early applications* are strongly encouraged.

Apply in four easy steps:

  1. Complete the application form.
  2. Complete an online or in-person assessment or submit requested transcripts.
  3. Book your admission interview.
  4. Attend your interview to complete registration.

Courses offered

Sheridan offers the following high-school level, college-equivalent credits:

Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) core subjects

  • Communications (up to Grade 12C)
  • Mathematics (up to Grade 12C)
  • Chemistry
  • Biology

Elective subjects

  • Computer Applications
  • Strategies for Success

Program delivery

Where:

Academic Upgrading is offered at all three of Sheridan's campuses (Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville), with in-person, hybrid and virtual options* (*elective courses only).

When:

Academic Upgrading operates on a three-term schedule. Each term is 14 weeks:

  • Fall term: September–December
  • Winter term: January–April
  • Spring/Summer term: May–August

We encourage you to apply at least three weeks before the start of a term, as seats fill quickly.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for Academic Upgrading if you are:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • An Ontario resident.
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Convention refugee with a Notice of Decision.

*Submit your application at least three weeks before the term begins to improve your chances of securing a spot. Late applications may be waitlisted for the next term.

Frequently asked questions

  • Program length varies based on your individual goals and academic needs:

    • Your starting level is determined by pre-admission assessments.
    • The number of courses required depends on your chosen pathway.
    • You can only take two core courses per semester.
    • Classes are offered in person on weekdays.
    • 1–2 days per week, depending on the course.
    • Each class is three hours.

    Class times:

    • Morning: 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
    • Afternoon: 1–4 p.m.
    • Evening: 6:30–9:30 p.m.

    Schedules are subject to change.

  • All of Sheridan's Academic Upgrading courses are free. Academic Upgrading is funded by Employment Ontario for eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents and Convention refugees of Ontario.

    There are no textbook purchases required.

  • Yes. Eligible students may apply for financial support to help with public transportation and childcare costs. 

    This assistance is designed to reduce barriers for students with limited financial resources.
